WHAT IT DOES

Different hand saws can be used to cut wood, metals, plastics, and plasterboard of different thicknesses.  Do you need a hand saw or a power saw?  This may depend on how much cutting you need to do, material, accuracy needed etc.

Hack Saw A saw with a rigid metal frame and smaller teeth used to cut metal and plastic. Some hacksaws have a nut that allows you to tension the blade.

Junior Hack Saw Small version of the hacksaw with tiny teeth used for cutting small pieces of wood, plastic or metal.

Info about blades - You need the right blade to get the best results.  Please note, we can’t guarantee the state of the blade that’s in the saw when you borrow it but blades are replaceable and cheap (for example, at your local Screwfix).

Most saw blades are rated by teeth per inch (TPI), ranging from 2 to 32. Blades with lower TPI numbers and large teeth will cut quickly but produce rougher cuts. The higher TPI ratings with smaller teeth will produce fine, smooth cuts. Some blades are designed to cut metal, others aren’t. Also bear in mind that some saws cut on the forward stroke and others cut on the backward stroke, depending on which way the teeth are facing. Always make sure the teeth are the right way round for your saw when you are fitting a new blade.
