WHAT IT DOES

Cordless angle grinders is used to cut metal, brick, stone, mortar and other masonry; grind metal; clean off rust; or prep metal for welding, when you don't have access to mains power. It work by rotating a disc (specific to each material) at very high speed to cut or grind material using abrasion.. The grinder can be quite power-hungry, so it may be a good idea to have a spare battery to hand. A corded angle grinder may be a better choice for big jobs.

WHAT IT DOES

Angle grinders are used for cutting and grinding in particular.  They can cut metal or stone (with the correct disks) and you can also get multi-purpose disks.  What they will cut is usually specified on the disk.  You can also get grinding disks, and abrasive disks for cleaning up surfaces, polishing, or deburring metal after a weld.  Commonly used in Edinburgh for getting your bike off the railings when you’ve forgotten your lock combination.

This is a powerful tool. Be mindful of your surroundings. Ensure the object you are working on is securely held in place. Angle grinders can be dangerous tools if not used properly. The most common accidents include kickbacks and flying sparks. Hold the grinder firmly in two hands. When using cutting discs, use only the edge of the disc. Sparks are normal when cutting steel. Be sure to use the right attachment for the job and if you are not experienced try to use it for easy tasks. Never change a disc with the cable plugged in.

• Consumables: Cutting, grinding, polishing or sanding discs/pads – Essential The specific disc/pad you need will depend on the task at hand and the material you work on - will you be cutting, or grinding? metal, stone, granite? The Tool Library can give you these, but it depends on stock-at-hand so you may need to source your own. Ask a volunteer for advice and a demonstration of changing the disc. • A grinder spanner or pin wrench or pin spanner – Essential if you want to swap or replace discs.
• Battery charger or spare battery pack – Recommended Especially for larger jobs

HOW TO USE IT

Don’t try to cut with a grinding disc, or grind with a cutting disc! Fit the right disc for your project.

Start the tool using the trigger buttons - there is usually a safety double trigger. Both need to be pushed for the tool to start.

Make sure the grinder is at full speed BEFORE making contact with your object.

Go gently at first so you get a feel for the tool and how it reacts when you apply pressure to your object.
